Vineyards in central London!

LONDON – Thanks to guerilla gardeners our cities are greener, but the next step is city farming. This yearʼs “London Yieldʼs: Urban agriculture” exhibition looks set to revolutionise the way we think about food production in cities.

Londoners consume nearly seven million tonnes of food a year and over eighty percent of it comes from outside the UK. That means the food supply of the UK is almost totally dependent on oil. Not the smartest way to save the planet!

With the price of food skyrocketing thanks to ʻthe crunchʼ it’s no longer economically viable, let alone sustainable, to keep importing our beans from the other side of the world. The solution? Growing fruit and vegetables closer to home!

Take the idea of architect Soonil Kim-King. He wants to create a vineyard and winery in the heart of London.  Kim-King thinks Londoners could produce 10,000 bottles of red wine every year. Other ideas include creative ways of growing vegetables indoors and an urban ʻFarmacyʼ harvesting medicinal herbs grown along the banks of Londonʼs canals. You can see all these designs and more at “The Building Centre”, London until 30 May.
