Part 4: Surf the web and stay green

LONDON - It’s time for the final part of our look at ways to use the internet and stay green at the same time. We’ve saved the best for last with a look at the growing clutch of environmental iPhone apps, ranging from the funky (is that word still acceptable?), to the frankly ridiculous. Here’s a few to get started: Green Lemur (eco tips and ideas), Greenmeter (measure your fuel-efficiency) and

So, for one night we’ll add some Strawberry flavour to the Earth Charter. Have a look at www.earthcharter.nl (Dutch) if you want to read the whole document or click here to watch an explanatory video. See y’all this Friday at Rialto at 10pm!

Mumbai minister wants to ditch plastic

MUMBAI - ‘Ditch plastics’, is the motto of the moment for the new Environment Minister, Jairam Ramesh, in India. As people are slowly waking up to the fact that plastic waste is a reason to panic, many states in India are taking steps to create plastic free zones.

Bio plastic bags, plastic pellets and recycled plastic to make designer bags or even to lay roads are the ‘in’ things in India today. Recently in Mumbai, amid heavy rains, the city came to a standstill as

Part 3: Surf the web and stay green

LONDON - It’s part 3 of our look at ways to stay green while surfing the web. This time, it’s green Google gadgets and the iffy subject of web offsetting in the spotlight.

Google gadgets: let huge corporate behemoths have access to even more of our data? Sure, why not. To be fair to Google, their non-profit division (google.org) is busy devising wave-powered floating data centres and other zany methods of creating clean energy. Now both Google and Microsoft are releasing programmes to measure and amend personal home energy usage.

Trash talk

AMSTERDAM - Long before the ‘plastic soup’, the huge floating rubbish dump in the Pacific, hit the headlines, I had an odd fascination with litter. As a kid, while my friends were doing sponsored walks to raise money for charity, I was doing sponsored litter picks. On a three-kilometre stretch of road near my house, I could fill 10 bin bags with refuse that passing motorists had thrown out of their windows.

Eco-friendly hairdressers cut the crap

AMSTERDAM - The concept of a bad hair day takes on a whole new meaning when you visit Marike Cazemier. Owner of the Netherlands’ first environmentally friendly hairdresser, Haarzuiver (Pure Hair) in The Hague. Cazemier does not offer perms or bleaching. It might sound strange to start an article about a hairdresser by listing the services not offered. But it’s precisely what Cazemier won’t do that makes her different from most coiffeurs.

Part 2: Surf the web and stay green

LONDON - It’s part 2 of our look at ways to stay green while surfing the web. This time, we’re looking at printing and web hosting.

Print less crap: How many times have you printed a web page only to have a useless fart of banner ads, blank spaces and irrelevant text emerge? A few smart programmes automatically select (or let you choose) what to print, without faffing about with copy and paste. Check out www.printwhatyoulike.com and www.printgreener.com.

Eco-friendly web hosting: There are several hosting companies which claim to be either solar or wind powered. Hard to judge their claims, but some of the more popular ones include: www.aiso.netwww.solarhost.co.ukwww.gogreenhosting.com and www.greenhost.nl.

Pink Wolf: recycling in the name of fashion

Pink Wolf is a fashion and art label from designer extraordinaire, Sonia Verguet from Strasbourg. This talented 28 year old recycles and reworks objects she finds and breathes new life into them. Strawberry Earth loves her signature suitcases.

She finds old suitcases in flea markets and reworks them in her colour of choice. Verguet adds provocative details including pistols, knives and the odd axe.
