‘Eating Animals’ Requires a Strong Stomach
AMSTERDAM - On the brink of fatherhood, Jonathan Safran Foer (32), acclaimed author of the novels Everything is Illuminated and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, found his eating habits taking on a new urgency: he would soon not only be making dietary decisions for himself but also for his son. With this in mind, he set out to answer questions about how, why and what he eats, and the economic, social and environmental implications of these choices.

Amsterdam is good, green and great
AMSTERDAM - Amsterdam is the first city in Europe to get a green guide. Written by Harold Verhagen, the Good & Green Guide is intended to help readers navigate the many healthy and sustainable activities, shops and restaurants the Dutch capital has to offer.

Three Years Later: An Allotment
Three years ago I joined a list. The infamous Allotment List. If, like many urban Tiny Gardeners, you too have entertained ideas of growing your own vegetables on one of these hallowed sites, chances are your dreams crashed back down to earth with a wet thud.
Apparently, for every allotment plot in the UK, there are 30 people (or 300 eager green fingers) waiting to grab it. The waiting list for some Central London plots can be up to 10 years. In Camden, it’s 40 years. FORTY YEARS! You could grow another limb in that time.
Luxury Hotel Palafitte sees the green light

NEUCHATEL - Strawberry Earth’s second Swiss stop was Hotel Palafitte, a luxury hotel on the shores of one of the country’s most exquisite lakes, Neuchatel. On a clear day it’s even possible to see the Alps from the comfort of your own private balcony at this five star hideaway. But although the luxury of Hotel Palafitte is not in doubt, we did have some questions about their strive to go green. Just click here to read our full Strawberry review.
Swiss Hotel Palafitte sees the green light
NEUCHATEL - Switzerland is famous in part for its stunning lakes. If you want to enjoy swimming in one of them in style, five star Hotel Palafitte is the perfect hotel for you. An electric buggy parked in the hotel’s foyer ferries guests and their luggage to roomy private suites – quite an experience indeed! 24 out of the hotel’s 40 luxury lodges stand on stilts above the beautiful Lake Neuchatel. You can simply open your balcony doors, slide down private ladder and dive into the refreshing waters of the lake.
Green and zen in Briar Rose Bed & Breakfast

COLORADO – Boulder, Colorado is one of the greenest cities in the United States and was a suitable final stop for intrepid Strawberry reporter Tom van de Beek’s US tour. Tom’s US adventures ended under the roof of the quintessentially Boulder, Briar Rose Bed & Breakfast. Just click here to read the full Strawberry review.
Green and zen in Briar Rose Bed & Breakfast
COLORADO - If there’s one city in the United States that’s ahead of everyone else in terms of sustainability it’s Boulder, Colorado. Situated in the midst of mountains and forests and home to Colorado University, the city lives and breathes sustainability. Briar Rose Bed & Breakfast is on one of the main roads in Boulder, Arapahoe Avenue. From the outside Briar Rose seems like any ordinary (albeit beautiful) Boulder house, but inside it’s far from that.
New chocolate brand raises the bar
AMSTERDAM - Ananda is slender and darkly seductive, with vital statistics that are almost too perfect to be true. No, we are not talking about Holland’s next top model, but rather a new Dutch brand of chocolate.
Launched this month by Amigos International Responsible Trade & Consultancy, Ananda Chocolate contains a minimum of 70% Ecuadorian cocoa, is organic and 100% ‘PICO’ (produced in the country of origin). This means that not only local farmers but also local designers and packers benefit from the production process.
